First Paragraphs - Prose of the Compelling Sort

We've tried our hand at poetry ... time to move on to prose.

Type up the first paragraph of your first prose piece under this post (using the comments - you know the drill). Remember, this first paragraph should be compelling and enticing. Draw readers in with your presentation of conflicts, use of imagery, diction (or whatever other method works best) so they will wish you had posted the entire story.

Oh, yes. One more thing: Don't forget to "sign" your name at the end of the first paragraph using the NUMBER assigned to you.

  1. My feet sink into the warmth of the sand. Big Pine Key West was the location of my family and I. The house on the canal was where i stayed. Forests of palm trees and other tropical plants. This is one of my most loved places

  2. Slowly, the sun descends below the Nevada desert, bringing the day to an end. Lights begin to flash. It's now nighttime in the City of Sin. Casino managers are preparing for an onslaught of fools who are getting ready to throw away that 401k. The bartenders are getting ready to help those poor fools drown their sorrows in a vast array of gin, vodka, whiskey... Pretty much any type of alcohol you could imagine. The Las Vegas Police Department is getting ready for another night of drunk fools walking the streets, wreaking havoc. It's just another night here in Las Vegas, America's Playground.

  4. A few years ago0 i went to the coolest place that I've ever been to. I was at my first major league baseball game at Jacobs Field. The Cleveland Indians were playing the Boston Red Sox. My Family was rooting for the Red Sox, I was rooting for the Indians.

  5. When I first met him he was far beyond anything I had ever expected and he has continued to amaze me ever since. I still remember the first time we met. He was wearing a bright green jersey and pants that hugged his ankles because they would never stay up past his knees. He had a few brown freckles just below is eyes and glasses that looked like they were from the 90's. He always had a reason for everything he did and said. He was a very passive person and didn't care about much. He was mean to the people who wasn't close to him, I think that's why I liked him so much. He was too interesting for a 15 year old, and that made me always want to find out more about him. He was my best friend at this point, but little did we know, we were just at the beginning.

  6. European Road Trip

I whipped my head around and yelled,"I've grown up, Mom. I'm not a little kid anymore," as I dashed down the stairs and my braid smacked my left cheek,"I'm tired of this town and this life. I want to get away and travel and I'm going to leave." I said rushing out to my midnight blue mustang, which had three silver pin stripes down it's middle. I also knew I was pushing my time limit because I had about half an hour to get from the suburbs in Gilette, Wyomining to the very opposite of Gilette where i will be flying out of this country FOREVER! "I'm moving to Spain," I thought to myself as I drove off of Granite street and left my former life behind me for good.

There has been lots of good memories in my life. One good memory I have is my first dog cocoa. Cocoa was a choclate lab. Like a week after we got him, he chewed a hole in my dad's lazy boy. After we had him for a few months we had to find a new home for him. He went to live what a family who had a farm and another lab.

  8. Although this was the last night the horses would be staying here, as we pulled up the short lane lined by bright green grass speckled with dandelions, I expected this trip to be no different than any of the other Tuesday/Thursday care-taking trips. However, by the end of the night, I decided that our trips to the Main Street barn went out with a bang.

  9. I can hear the shufle of boxes and papers in the kitchne as busy hands prepare dinner. The three of us are quite impatient and are in need of something to do. "lets go for a bike ride" said the familiar voice of my brother as he opened the door, letting in the sweet smell of spring. Eric agrees so he opens the oven, i can feel the heat ruch out, so he puts the pizza in the oven, and ~click~ locks the door and were off.

  10. My sister and i always get into very "heated discussions". Sometimes we have bad days and take it out on eachother. When you have a bad day your mood is bad, you feel like jumping on people for no apparent reason. Sometimes you sleep, but do not rest. When me and my sister get into deep arguments they cant be stopped. Unless of course we are yellled at by our parents or an adult to stop. It sometimes can get very intense and crazy.

  11. It was September 1999. I walked into the ice rink for the first time as a hockey player. And the first time I stepped onto the ice I felt the energy rush through my body. And today even when I put on my skates I get the same feeling. When I hear the crowd and see a big hit, that is when it hits me, I am a hockey player.

  12. I was outside and the whole woods was peaceful. We were going to have a huge bonfire that night. We had a lot of people over. We played a huge game of hide and go seek. But then something happened and the whole woods became frantic. And so did the people in the woods.

  13. At the age of 6 or 7 years old, my favorite cousin was in town. We didn't always get along when we were little. She's exactly two weeks older than me. On a week day during the summer, I remember my cousin Mia and I got into a fight. Don't underestimate little kids. Once we got in a fight I turned brilliant. I tricked them and ran outside. They of course followed and I ran into the house and locked the door.
